Clinical observation of the epidural morphine injection

Abstract
One hundred patients who underwent lower abdominal surgery were given epidural anesthesia using bupivacaine with or without morphine.
Patients were divided into two groups; group A was administered 20ml of 0.5% bupivacaine and group B was administered 20ml of 0. 5% bupivacaine with long of morphine.
The author observed postoperative change of PaCO2, duration of pain relief, amount of analgesic consumed postoperatively, and incidence of nausea, vomiting and voiding difficulty, and compared them in both groups.
The results are as follows:
1) The amount of analgesic consumed postoperatively was marked less in the group B.
2) The postoperative change of PaCO2 was higher in group B than group A, however no dyspnea was observed clinically.
3) Duration of postoperative pain relief in the group B was from 18 hours to 29 hous.
4) The incidence of nausea and vomiting were no difference in both groups.
From the above results, the author concluded that for postoperative pain relief the use of morphine with bupivacaine as a epidural anesthesia was much superior to single use of bupivacaine.
